CONTENUR, Spanish leader in the manufacturing, maintenance, and cleaning of containers for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), has reached an agreement with the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to produce and install side-loading containers, also known as stationary on-street containers, similar to the ones that can be seen not only in the streets of Madrid and other Spanish cities, but also in the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. The contract, which will be in force for 10 years, includes the maintenance and cleaning of the containers as well.
Under the leadership of Mayor Eric Adams, the City of New York has undertaken the containerisation of both residential and commercial solid waste, with a view to improve both appearance and sanitation of the city’s streets as well as to reduce the rodent population, which is a problem in some districts of the city. As part of its containerisation strategy, the New York City Department of Sanitation is planning to implement the side-loading system for buildings containing more than 30 household units and published a public tender last March 2024, for which CONTENUR has been the successful bidder. Buildings between 10 and 30 household units will be able to choose between this system and the traditional wheeled bins.
The first side-loading containers will be installed in the district of West Harlem from 1st May 2025. Following an environmental review, further expansion may proceed from there.

The New York contract is the first one that CONTENUR has been awarded in the USA, and it will serve as a springboard for expansion in one of the largest markets on the planet.
